I'm a little late in getting to this QOTD, but I figured I'd do it anyway because I'm bored.
This weekend has mostly been about cleaning. I washed every clothing item I own, and gave my room a thourough floor-to-ceiling scrubbing.
I know, I know. Too much excitement for one man to handle.
It's rainy here in central Texas, but it's beautiful. I love sitting outside after a rain and enjoying the weather when it's nice and cool, windy and just a bit damp. I've got nothing on the agenda today outside of cleaning, washing clothes and doing chores around the house, so I"m taking a few hours to just sit outside and stare at the sky and write. There's something about cool rain and cool weather that puts me in a creative mood, especially when it's a change of pace from the 100-degree days we're experiencing now.
The new Johnny Cash album, which hits stores on July 4th, is one of the saddest, most achingly beautiful pieces of work I have ever experienced in my life. I got an advance copy from the label last night, and I never could have prepared myself for what I heard when I gave it a first listen. I can honestly say that it's probably the only time in my entire life where I stopped what I was doing, put my head and in my hands, and just listened.
It's tough to listen to, especially knowing that Cash recorded these songs in a period of 30 days before his death. The story is that 3 days after June Carter died, Johnny called Rick Rubin and said "if you don't have something for me to do, I'm going to die." Cash had nothing left to live for, as the love of his life was gone on and he was just biding his time to join her. So Rubin and Cash went to work, and recorded 30 songs on 30 days, and then Johnny passed away. The first fruits of those thirty days are being released on July 4 as American V: A Hundred Highways, and you simply MUST buy this album when it hits stores. Be prepared, though, because as I've said before, it's not an easy listen. Every creak, every hint of John's old age is included here, and nothing is spared.
I'll be reviewing this for Inside Pulse, so look for the review on July 4.
It's sad, but my plans for the weekend are pretty much nothing. I went out to see Roger Clemens pitch last night for the Round Rock Express and then saw Nacho Libre (fantastic), but the rest of the weekend is going to be devoted pretty much to cleaning and sleeping.
I might end up seeing Cars tonight, if I can find someone to go with me.
